“…a man’s life consists not in the abundance of the things which he possesses.” – Luke 12:15
If you are like most people, you may have often been caught in the trap of measuring your worth by the things you own, your job/career, the suburb/area you live in etc. but would you be less worthy if you had none of those things? Perhaps it is human nature to WANT ALL the nice cars, women, houses, kids, gadgets and the like, but do you NEED them to live a happier and meaningful life?
The truth, however, as Democritus rightly observes is that Happiness resides not in the possessions and not in gold, the feeling of happiness dwells in the soul. Yes! Having the shiny things of life feels nice, but letting them enslave you leads to emptiness of heart. After all when all is said and done, you’ll carry none of them. For me, nothing portrays what is important like the funeral house, nobody ever mentions the THINGS the deceased has left (unless of course out of greed)… People cry because of the deceased’s character, kindness, family, memories shared, love, and compassion etc… all of them internal, priceless, and not dependent on external possessions.
Even without your material things you are still YOU and Worth! Remember, Life is too short not to love, be kind, be compassionate, have good character, have good moments with loved ones…
